The perception of English consonants by Norwegian lis- teners: A preliminary report

چکیده

This study is part of a multilingual project investigating native and non-native perception of English consonants. In the present investigation, VCV syllables presented in quiet and in different types of noise were identified by Norwegian listeners. The results showed that even in quiet not all consonants were recognized correctly. Consonant confusions can be interpreted as caused by phonological, spectral as well as orthographic factors. Different types of noise appeared to affect identification to different degrees. The data suggest that noisespecific impact is explainable in terms of energetic vs. informational masking.

Native and non-native listeners' perception of English consonants in different types of noise

This paper shows that the effect of different types of noise on recognition of different phonemes by native versus non-native listeners is highly variable, even within classes of phonemes with the same manner or place of articulation. In a phoneme identification experiment, English and Dutch listeners heard all 24 English consonants in VCV stimuli in quiet and in three types of noise: competing...

Cross-language perception of Japanese singleton and geminate consonants: preliminary data from non-native learners of Japanese and native speakers of Italian and australian English

We examined the perception of Japanese consonant length contrasts (singleton vs geminate) in four groups of listeners: two groups of non-native learners of Japanese, three each at highly-advanced (NNJ1) and upper-intermediate (NNJ2) levels, native speakers of Italian (IT) (n=10) and Australian English (OZ) (n=8) with no knowledge of Japanese. Because Italian, like Japanese, uses consonant lengt...

Optimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*

This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...

Production data was collected by means of a Sentence Reading Test considering preceding vowel as phonological context. Perception was assessed by means of an identification test contrasting native-like vs. nonna...

Desensitization in Norwegian Vowel Perception by Native and American English Listeners

Some differences in speech perception by native and nonnative listeners can be accounted for as transference from a native language. Others appear to result from universal preferences, such as duration. In the case of L2 vowel perception, duration may be used to categorize vowels when, from a non-native listener ́s perspective, inadequate spectral cues are available. The perception of Norwegian ...
